Peace Education
and Guidance and Counseling in Secondary Schools in Northern Uganda,
a pilot program in partnership with the Ministry of Education and
Sports and supported by USAID/Uganda. Major goals include building a
culture of peace to prevent new wars, build peaceful schools and
communities, replace cycles of violence with reconciliation and
provide guidance and counseling to war-affected children and youth.
The program is operating in seven secondary schools in four
districts of Northern Uganda – Gulu, Amuru, Kitgum and Pader The
program has four main components: peace education classes,
student-centered peace activities, guidance courses and psychosocial
services. We trained 88 teachers as peace educators and guidance
counselors. 2,441 students were trained as peer mediators and peer
counselors. An overarching goal is to mainstream throughout the
secondary school and teacher training systems throughout Uganda.
Results have been groundbreaking: eradication of bullying in all
seven schools, greatly reduced incidence of indiscipline, improved
student academic performance, improved student-teacher relations, an
ethos of non-violence at each school, extensive healing from
war-related trauma, and transition from punitive to restorative
justice methods at each school.
